Pika (Rock Rabbit) [Ochotona princeps]
Pikas are small mammals, related to rabbits (lagomorphs—with two sets of incisors, unlike rodents).
North American pikas usually live at high altitudes where rockpiles (“talus slopes”) are formed at the base of cliffs by the shattering action of the freeze-thaw process.
Most pikas use rockpiles for shelter from the weather and from predators.
To find a pika, pay close attention when you are walking near a rock pile or boulder field in the mountains. If you hear a high pitched “Eeek!” sit still for a while and you will see this small creature scurry from rock to rock.
